Considering that a substantial number of biological process (both physiological and pathological process) are governed by carbohydrate-protein interactions and that the single interaction between a protein and a saccharide is weak, in the biological processes, multiple interaction occurs increasing global avidity of the system (phenomenon knowns as multivalence). The focus of her research is to design and synthetize multivalent systems with the capability of specifically interact with a specific proteins (combining both, a high affinity with a high specificity), followed by the determination of kinetic and thermodynamic parameters involved in the interaction. Without abandoning the perspective of using novel multivalent systems to detect cancer cell lines and/or destroy or disrupt the interaction of some specific pathogens.
Surface plasmon resonance (SPR), Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), Circular dichroism and spectroscopic measurements of exogen or endogen probes have been used for evaluating and characterizing carbohydrate-protein interactions.
